Pretty cool stuff mrbb! Would think they would be looking for a good place to take a looong nap this time of year and the weather like it is!!
OK here are a couple of bear pic's from last nite
it is in the low 20's here and got about 4 inches of snow , and this bear has been about so far, cruising my area all yr, he is one of 3 cubs with the mother bear
the mother and 2 of the other cubs have denned up for winter about 2-3 weeks ago, but this little guy doesn't get the hint
most of my neighbors feed him, so sure that is one main reason he is still up and about
but I have seen many bears over the yrs that just don't den much in winter
so I tossed him a couple snacks since he was out there to get a few pic's for you's
hope you enjoy

Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.

yea ods are 90% are sleeping by now
females always go first
BUT some males never den at all
they might take a nap here and there but stay active all winter
mostly depends on food
as a bear lives by food
if easy meals are about
some will just eat all yr, never denning at all
Kinda wondered how they react to winter down your way and further South. Michigan you pretty much guarantee once it gets cold enough they are denned up.

yea like I said most do den up
But to be honest, it all depends on the bear, even in AK< some will stay active based on food and well THE bear itself
its one of them things most folks just take for granted, bears denning up in winter
I have seen them out down the farm in -10 degree temps, and thats not with a feeder or hand out, just walking about in swamps
while I was looking for sheds in mid late feb, but to be honest, I have seen them about every month of the yr out and about
but again, its not many that run about in winter
I knew Gary Alt, one of the most re known bear biologist in the world for yrs, he lived near me, and I learned a lot ,
with talking to him, /helping him over the yrs
he is a very nice guy that knows more aboutblack bears,
I would say than anyome else in the world.
things he did with them, and stories he can tell are amazing!
if you ever see him giving a seminar some place its well worth the trip, knows a LOT about deer too!
Bears are just super cool critter to me
