I second that. Got leaves raked, gutters cleaned out, now time to relax a bit. I will be going out in the morning again though.
I'm getting ready to head out the door. I will chat with you all after daybreak and give you an update.
I heard alot of movement all around me before it got light but so far I haven't seen any yet.
Not a thing this morning. Next time out will either be Saturday evening or Monday morning.
I'm going to do it. I'm heading out. I just have a good feeling this evening. Looking to put my first one down this season.
I'm all settled in and ready to put one down!!!!!
So far none yet. But, you all know what time it is!!!!!
Just saw a couple fawns.
Better late than never. I had a button buck come in around 6. I was rattling and all of a sudden I heard steps coming at me fast. I thouhgt it may have been a buck. It was, a button buck. He milled around the area a bit then I heard a doe bleating somewhere behind me. They eventually left. About 6:30 I did some more rattling. Once again I heard the sound of a deer coming rather quickly. Again, I thought it surely must be a buck this time. It was, a button buck again. But wait, more foot steps. a buck? Yes, button buck again. Saw 6 deer overall. I could have popped those three button bucks fairly easily. They looked like adult does. They are starting to get some size on them. As slow as the season has been going it was pretty tempting to take one out.
Way to hold off man of the fall you would have regretted shootin a button buck
Ok....Tenn. Here again...been after a big buck I named Clyde all yr.... This weekend waz youth riffle weekend here...yesterday morning couldnt get out due to sons playoff football game...this morning had a lone mature doe work her way in through some sapplings in front of us, sure enough Clyde was trailing her...igot excited..son got riffle ready, he wouldnt Come out of sapplings... Went into a small opening at 60yds...my son shot... Clyde didnt move, I look at son and say chamber another round... Time I look back, he is gone...he swears that he was right on him with the scope and hit him...iwent to where I thought he stood didnt see any emediate blood. If a deer gets hit with a 270 riffle would he stand there for a few secs before bolting? Is there a chance that I wouldnt find blood right at the spot he shot? He tells me he hit him...I guess im going to go back tommorow and walk A little to reassusre myself... Just dont know, I bow hunt never riffle. Whats your take?
Antlrz I would say you should have found hair and blood, if you didn't find either then I say the boy missed. Walk it out tomorrow if it makes you feel better. As far as being on him it possible but could have hit a limb branch or something throwing the trajectory off.
I haven't been out since Saturday evening. I am on my vacation now and once this beyotch Hurricane Sandy clears out I will be pounding the woods. Looks like I will be getting back out either Thursday morning/evening or both.
In stand..weather broke but still a bit windy...decided to try it. Got in at 4....nothing yet....only have one good stand for this wind....see what happens
Good luck out there. Let us know how it went.
Got in stand and all settled in at 3:49. Shot a yearling doe at 3:59. I think that was my second fastest hunt ever.
I was out this morning and it was afairly good morning even though I didn't get anything. I had a nice doe come in at 7:15, but it was too dark to shoot her and legal shooting light wasn't until 7:28. Then at 7:20 another deer came in behind the doe. It was that giant I had been seeing the first two weeks of the season. The doe bolted when he closed to 14 yards of my stand and he was broadside but again it was just too dark to shoot. I think if that doe wouldn't have bolted out of there in about 10 more minutes I would have had a giant on the ground. Then, behind me I had two really nice shooter bucks chasing a group of three doe's about 30-40 yards behind my stand. If those doe's would have just came out past my stand I would have been in business. After that the next 3 hours were quiet and I got down. I won't be able to get back out until Monday morning.
I am not a big fan of decoys, but tomorrow I will be taking out my Montana doe decoy and setting it up where these two shooter bucks I've been seeing has been running these does. I will be spraying her down with the special golden doe estrus and hopefully the big boys will make a bee line for her when I give a few bleats on the can call. If there is ever a time for a decoy, it is now.
So far this morning i have seen a young buck and 1 doe. No shooters yet. I'm about to do some rattling and grunting here now.
I saw a small buck and a doe this morning and that was it. I will be going back out this afternoon.
I'm about to head back out here in a few minutes. I will try and send updates as good as I can.
Unfortunately I forgot my phone at home. So, here is an update of this evening and what will be going on tomorrow. This evening I saw 2 small bucks. One was a 6 point and I think the other one was a 4 pointer. Hopefully tomorrow morning will be a little more exciting. There is a heavy freeze warning for the area so it should be nice and crunchy in the morning and I will be able to hear the big boys coming a long ways off.
Well, I blew a chance at a real beast of a buck this morning. I have been saving my one stand for this week. I hit that stand this morning and it didn't disappoint but I blew it though. Just after legal shooting light I did a blind call with the can and hit the grunt tube a couple times. Immediately I heard movement behind me over my right shoulder. At first sight it looked like a 2 1/2 year old just inside his ears so I didn't get too excited. He then stepped into the clearing 15 yards behind my stand and I saw he was a true beast. His spread was only about 14" but his G 2's were about 12" long. His brow tines were like 8" and they angled in towards each other. I would estimate his bases were like 7"-8". This buck had some serious mass. He was a 10 pointer with a 3 inch kicker off his left G-2. He was broadside on my right side like 10 yards away with a wide open shot. This is where the problem began. I was strictly a crossbow hunter in the past. This tree is really set up pretty much for crossbow use. I even said to myself I should take my crossbow instead of my compound. I could not pull this shot off. I had to wait until he started walking again and draw on him. Then he angled to his right and walked away right behind a tree. I did have an opening at forty yards but I had to stand up. When I stood up there was a branch in my way and I still couldn't shoot. Eventually i had to just let him walk away. The one good thing about all this is he didn't spook at all. So, tomorrow morning I will be back out in the same stand with my good old Horton Legend.
sucks about the shot. let us know how it goes!!
Back in the same stand this evening I saw the big boy in Tuesday morning. I haven't hunted this stand in the evening yet and it's only the third time in it this year. Hopefully something goes down tonight!!!!!
It has been awhile since i posted on this thread. I will be going out this evening (Sat. Dec 29th) trying to put one down. I will try and post live updates again. That was fun. Once it gets to be prime time I may have to wait until the hunt is over though, lol. Tune in for live action this afternoon beginning around 3:30pm.
Good luck to you ManOfTheFall!! Glad to see you are still out after them!
In stand and ready. Saw 2 on my way in. Hoping that is a good sign. Was also scared to death when about 500 doves took off at the same time, lol. Check back for updates.
Nothing since I settled in except alot of birds. I must be hidden well though. I had a bird land on me and walk around on my leg.
Still waiting. Nothing yet.
Just saw 2 but no shot. The last 1/2 hour is coming up. Hopefully it is filled with action.
The last 1/2 hour didn't produce any deer. However I was encouraged by the fact that I saw 4 deer. Tune back in Monday afternoon as I will again attempt to fill a late season tag.
Well good luck to ya when you do get out!!
Update baby. Just put a nice doe down!!
I shot the doe at 5:20 pm on New Year's Eve. My first New Year's Eve deer. Here are a few pics of the doe and the spot I was hunting out of.
I will be back out on the evenings of the 3rd, 4th, and the 5th. This will all be with the bow, no ML.
Good luck to you. This is a fun thread to read.
I will be heading out to a different spot in a little over an hour. I have seen some really big buck tracks in the snow in this area so hopefully maybe this big boy will come out in the daylight and give me a chance. check back for updates!!!!!
Got a late start but I'm in stand and ready!!!!!
