Wow, I have been paying $425.00 plus tax $28.69 total $453.69. I was meaning to post a new thread soon about taxidermist. I have shoulder mounted 3 bucks. The first one I got back 14 months later. Second one took him 17 months. Third one, I pushed him and got it back 12 months after dropping it off. I just don't think it should take this long. I probably won't be going back there anymore. If anyone knows a good one around central Ohio or Lancaster area I would appreciate it. I don't wanna run my taxidermist in the ground publicly but I am done with him. PM me if anyone can help out with a less expensive yet good one who is a little better with their time. I think mine is just lazy and I really don't think he is even doing them. I think he farms it out to other people which pisses me off and I can't prove it. I have showed up before and asked to look at its progress and he always says well it's not here. Its at home, not the shop. Oh well
Bills Taxidermy in Atwater on Unger Road. He's been $320.00 OTD for years and does awesome work. His most famous buck is prolly the Jeff McCulley Buck (257 4/8) killed in Summit County in 2010. The deer and mount was featured in NAW. Great guy and does outstanding work.
This years buck is costing me $495 for a semi sneak with offset shoulder
400 but its by one of the better taxi's in the area.
475 for mine last year.
well , I used to have a very close friend that used to mount all mine, well he did about 25 fotr me!
and did it at just costs for me, and that was under a 100 bucks a head for yrs , yes I was spoiled for sure!
and he did great work
BUT he stopped doing it a couple yrs back, and I have been looking for a good replacement, and not having any luck really either!
the last 4 I had done cost me between 300 and 450 bucks, and to be honest, I wouldn't go back to them again,
as the heads came out, not so great
I think most taxidermist kinda count on folks not knowing the difference between a GOOD mount and a SO SO one!, and sadly most guys don't!
always said most guys find out a head is bad after they get one back that is good and put it next to the first one!
as for how long it takes
I have had heads done in under 3 months
MOST , NOT ALL< shops wait till they a bunch of hides to send in all at once, get a better rate on tanning than(well those that don't tan there own ), and MORE profit for them then doing so,
and why it takes so many so long, as if they send them out all at once they get them all back at once, so if they send out 50, they get 50 back at same time, thus a LOT of work to get them all done
and personally, I think thats also why some turn out a few great heads, then as they get tired of working on abunch at a time ,
say burned out
and then try going faster and quality slips, meaning you might get a great mount and guy behind you gets a SO SO one, or worse
its not the guy doesn't have the skills, just they don't put 100% in all them when they start to get behind or, just tired of working on them!
I have also seen this with many taxidermist ordering a certian size form, like a one size fits most then!!
they take an average size form and order a BUNCH of them to get a deal on them, and then some guys get a form, a lot smaller than the deer they killed, and don't be happy with what they get back
AGAIN, NOT all do this, but sadly a lot do in my area any how
a good taxidermist is not easy to find if you ask me, and a dying art almost!!
sorry if I got off topic, just giving some info I happen to know about on this
$275 this year. Used to be $250 last. I took my 2011 buck there, needed a cape and the rack re-colored cost me $300 total. They do a phenomenal job and I'll never take mine anywhere else! I've had five bucks done by them since 2005 and they all look as good as they did the day I picked them up. JEDS taxidermy in Rarden. If anyone would like their info pm me. Oh, and their turnaround time is the fastest I've seen! The longest I've ever waited is 5 months. That was this year and again, needed a cape and the rack colored. Oh and it's two guys that do it together. Hence the quick turnaround time. And neither guys name is Jed.
$300.00 and up for good work. European mounts are the way to go. Getting my third one this year. Fast, fairly priced and cool!
