Persimmons are plentiful, ripe and just started falling. Pears are plentiful and just starting to fall. Crabapples are plentiful and not falling yet. For the squirrels, the shagbark hickory nuts around here are the size of tennis balls, biggest I've ever seen them. They are falling hard right now. Pig nuts are plentiful as well.

An interesting letter in the Australian Shooter Magazine this week, which I quote:

"If you consider that there has been an average of 160,000 troops in the Iraq theater of operations
during the past 22 months, and a total of 2112 deaths, that gives a firearm death rate of 60 per 100,000 soldiers.

The firearm death rate in Washington, DC is 806 per 100,000 for the same period.

That means you are about 25 per cent more likely to be shot and killed in the US capital, which has
some of the strictest gun control laws in the US, than you are in Iraq.

Conclusion: "The US should pull out of Washington."

The weather was amazing Saturday, I wore a long sleeve shirt all day, nice breeze and cool. Monday was hotter, but I've put stands up in much worse conditions. Ticks and mosquitoes are not terrible, but still bad. Good luck to you all still getting stands up. Be safe.

2010 Rut Predictions - Charles Alsheimer

Take a look at search feature on this site. Back in June, Blackbeard came out with the following and I agree:

My 2 cents. And I must say I love following Alsheimer's Lunar Rut Theory, but I still don't know if it has any merit or not. The rut is supposed to coincide with the second full moon AFTER the autumnal equinox. AFTER is the key word. So the Autumnal Equinox is Sept 23, the first full moon after is Oct 23, and the second full moon is Nov 21. So Alsheimer's theory should pan out close to this-

Seeking- 11/18 to 11/22
Chasing- 11/23 to 11/29
Breeding- 11/30 to 12/6

This seems like a late rut, and is very similar to the 2002 lunar schedule when the Sept moon fell two days before the Autumnal Equinox (Autumnal Equinox was 09/23, Sept full moon was 09/21, Oct full moon was 10/21, and rutting moon was 11/20).

Just read Alsheimer's article in Deer and Deer Hunting which included his peak rut predictions. He says this year's rut will be similar to 1997 and 2005 and will be a late rut due to the September full moon falling before the Autumnal Equinox. The first full moon is 10/23 and the rutting moon will be Nov 21 (2nd full moon after Autumnal Equinox). He says:

Seeking- 11/15-11/21
Chasing- 11/21-11/27
Breeding- 11/27-12/06
Minor sweet spot- 10/22-11/03 (around the Oct full moon)
Major sweet spot- 11/20-11/30
The time of tough hunting due to few buck sightings will be 11/07-11/14

He basically says this will be a "trickle rut", with the intensity of the rut scattered throughout November rather than the typical 10 days of great hunting. Those of you who have experienced one of these "trickle ruts" are probably recalling past ruts that never seemed to start or ramp up like they should.

As usual, I'm not here to argue whether the rut happens the same time of the year every year, or if it does change based on the lunar calendar, you can decide what you believe. I think the lunar theory is very interesting though. This will be a good year to see if it has any merit.

OK boys....

What do you think I should do here. My only fixed tree stand is a double ladder stand. I used just two of the ladder sections so that I am ten feet off the ground. Its been that way for three years now.

I am thinking of either moving the stand to another tree (adding 10 more yards), or adding the 3rd section ladder to the existing spot. It may be over thinking, but would the changes spook deer, because something is "out of place"?

Going up provides better concealment, but less shooting lanes.

A guy sticks his head in the barber shop and asks how long before he can get his hair cut. The barber tells him there are 7 guys ahead of him and it'll be about an hour and a half, but if he takes a seat he'll get to him as soon as possible.

The guy says, thanks, but I'll just come back later.

The guy comes back the next day, sticks his head in the door and asks how long before he can get his hair cut. The barber says it's really busy, probably a couple of hours, but promises to get to him, if he takes a seat.

The guy says, thanks, but I'll just come back later.

The barber is somewhat frustrated and confused. This guy always has his hair cut, always says he'll come back later, comes back, but never gets his hair cut. He points to one of the men that's waiting his turn and says, "Hey! Why don't you follow that guy and see where he's going? I think he's going to the other barber down the road."

So, the customer follows the guy and comes back in about 20 minutes, laughing his butt off.

The barber says, "He's down at that other barber shop, isn't he?"

The customer says, "Nope! He's down at your house!"

Ok, I know this can be a sticky topic, and I want to be up front!

I was aproached today by a guy from the hunting area in SE ohio where I hunt, he owns 200+ acres, and leases a few hundred more!
he is looking to start up a semi guided deer hunt operation.
he is looking to provide PRIVATE land, lodging and meals, and what ever else help you could ask of him, he will even have stands, and food plots,
he is a crop farmer, so there will be standing crops either left for game, or just standing crops he hasn't harvested yet!
He has private lodging.
he is not looking for a lot of hunters,
he wants to find a few guys that are looking for a place to come back year after year!

all that said, he is asking a fair price .
any one interested in more, please PM me.
I will pass on all the info I have.

I cannot say I know this guy 100%.
But I do know the area he's in, and its prime!
so for anyone looking this might be a good deal!
