Swallows are some of the fastest flying birds that we have in Ohio. They like to skim the top of the water for insects that have just hatched. Because they eat such an enormous amount of insects, they are very important in the control of bug populations. You might recognize this speed demon, the barn swallow. Barn swallows are very much associated with humans. This bird is aptly named - they typically build their nests on support beams in barns, or under overhangs of sheds and other buildings. Barn swallows are unmistakable, with their very long forked tails and orange-ish underparts. They are also quite vocal, emitting a continuous barrage of rapid twittering notes.
