The Importance of Acorns

Acorns are an important food source for many wildlife species including white-tailed deer, wild turkey, black bears, gray squirrels, and ruffed grouse. Acorns provide the nutrition necessary for winter survival and reproduction of these and many other species. Each August, ODNR Division of Wildlife personnel conduct acorn mast surveys to determine the percent of red and white oak trees that are producing acorns. This data is shared with other eastern states to monitor acorn production in the region. The results of the 2018 acorn mast survey will be available later this fall.
